Town Name:- Ashbourne (Aescburma)

Derived from the Olde English words "aesc" (Ash) and "burma" (Stream) - Henmoor Brook runs through the town.

Bonny Prince Charlie stayed in the town in1745 at Ashbourne Hall (now the town's library) berfore he attacked Derby and again as he retreated from there. There is a traditional football match played in Ashbourne by the townsfolk every Shrove Tuesday that dates to medieval times . Where two teams, one from each side of Henmoor Brook (the Up'ards, and the Down'ards) battle it out. The goals are 3 miles apart and are old millstones. There are almost no rules and anything goes. the game is only over when one team scores a goal. This could take days.
